2008 has been a great year for the cinema with lots of event releases to please the movie studios. The new movies on dvd are there to catch what you've missed or to keep a favorite film and get some extra features too. It doesn't take long these days for a movie theatre release to transfer to dvd.

One of the hits of the year was a feel good musical and they don't come around too often. The music of Abba is celebrated in Mamma Mia! The film got great reviews, even from hard to please, cynical critics. The songs move the romantic comedy along and the Greek island scenery is terrific to look at. There's also a stellar cast, with Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Julie Walters. The dvd has a singalong section, a commentary by the director, a behind the scenes documentary, deleted scenes and a Gimme Gimme Gimme music video.

There were the usual number of sequels in the year and one of the most anticipated was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull starring Harrison Ford once again. Our hero admits he is older but still manages to have a series of adventures! The supporting cast includes Cate Blanchett, reveling in a baddie role, and John Hurt. Kate Allen reprises her role as Indiana's love interest and newcomer, Shia LaBeouf lends a hand with the action. This new movie on dvd also has bonus features, including the making of the film, features about the make up, skulls and props, post production and trailers.

Each new Batman movie has fans lining up round the block. Christian Bale appears again as the superhero in The Dark Knight with Michael Caine reprising his role as Albert. Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal are in support. The main interest however, was with Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker. It was his penultimate performance before his untimely death and it received critical acclaim.

Marvel comic book stories have been successfully adapted for film and The Incredible Hulk is made for the big screen. Now available on dvd, Bruce Banner / The Hulk is played by Edward Norton and he also wrote the screenplay. Supporting cast includes Tim Roth, Liv Tyler and William Hurt. More superheroes followed with Iron Man, another Marvel creation. The story is modernized and the plot involves Middle Eastern terrorists. Robert Downey Jr. stars and his co-stars include Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow. The dvd of the new movie contains deleted and extended scenes.

A hit TV series was made into a movie and was met with great excitement. This new movie on dvd of Sex and the City is now for sale. The gang is re-united and wedding plans are in the air for Mr. Big (Chris Noth) and Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker). Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Samantha (Kim Cattral) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) support their friend and Candice Bergen also features.
